What is Hospice?

Hospice care is specialized medical care for people living with a life-limiting illness when treatment is no longer focused on cure, but on comfort and quality of life.

Hospice does not mean giving up. It means:

  • Managing pain, breathing, anxiety, and other symptoms

  • Supporting emotional and spiritual well-being

  • Helping patients remain at home or in a familiar setting whenever possible

  • Supporting family members and caregivers every step of the way

Many families tell us they wish they had started hospice sooner. Research shows that patients who receive hospice care earlier often live an average of 29 days longer, with better comfort and support.

Who Pays For Hospice Care?

One of the most common concerns families have is cost. Hospice care through AlēvCare is fully covered by Medicare when eligibility criteria are met.

Medicare covers:

Hospice nurse visits

Medications related to the terminal illness

Medical equipment and supplies

Hospice aides for personal care

Social work and spiritual support

Bereavement support for families

Most private insurance plans and Medicaid also include hospice benefits. Our team helps verify coverage and handles the coordination so you are not navigating this alone.

Who We Serve

AlēvCare Hospice serves adults with serious, life-limiting illnesses, including but not limited to:

  • Advanced cancer

  • Heart failure

  • Lung disease

  • Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease

  • Neurological conditions

  • Advanced kidney or liver disease

Hospice is appropriate when a physician believes life expectancy may be about six months or less if the illness follows its usual course. Patients can continue hospice care beyond six months if they remain eligible.

Families do not need to wait until the final days. Earlier hospice involvement often brings better symptom control, less stress, and more meaningful time together.

Support for Children and Teens

AlēvCare Hospice is the only hospice in our coverage area with a full-time Child Life Specialist.

This specialized role supports children and young adults (approximately ages 4–22) by:

  • Helping them understand illness and loss in age-appropriate ways

  • Supporting parents with difficult conversations

  • Providing grief and coping tools during and after hospice care

We offer this service because supporting the entire family matters.

This role is not required by Medicare and is not reimbursed. We offer it because we believe young people affected by serious illness deserve specialized care.

Where Hospice Care Takes Place

We provide hospice care wherever patients call home, including:

  • Private residences

  • Assisted living communities

  • Memory care settings

  • Other appropriate home-like environments

Our team serves North Texas communities, bringing care directly to the patient rather than requiring travel to appointments.
